What Region C fixings actually mean

Australia's wind loading standard splits the country into regions, and Townsville sits in Region C, the cyclonic classification that runs up most of the Queensland coast. It is not a description of how windy it is on an average day. It is an engineering figure for the wind load a structure has to be designed to survive, and a roof built to it needs closer fastener spacing, mechanically fixed perimeter tiles and heavier tie-down than the same roof built to a milder region further south.

None of that is optional and none of it is a sales upsell. It is the code for this postcode, the same as a stump height or a slab thickness is the code for a different postcode. A quote that has not accounted for it is quoting a different, lighter job than the one your house actually needs.

Roughly eight to twelve per cent over what the same job would cost in a non-cyclonic region, mostly in fastener count and the labour to fix a smaller amount of roof at a time properly rather than gunning it down fast. On a re-roof that is a real number worth having in writing before you compare quotes, because a quote that has skipped it will always look cheaper and will always be a different job.

On a repair the cost difference is smaller and easier to miss entirely, which is exactly why we specify it on small jobs too rather than only on the big ones. A perimeter tile that is bedded but not mechanically fixed is a Region C non-compliance whether it is one tile or one hundred.
