A blocked gutter in Townsville does not simply overflow outside. It backs water up over the top of the fascia and in under the roof, which is why so many November ceiling stains turn out to be a leaf problem rather than a roof problem. We clear gutters and valleys by hand into a bucket rather than blowing debris onto the roof or into the downpipes, flush every downpipe until it runs clear, and check the fall while we are up there. You get photographs of each gutter run before and after, and a note of anything we saw that needs attention.

Gutters had not been done in years and the ceiling was staining every storm. Turned out not to be the roof at all. Cleaned, flow-tested and photographed the lot, and the stain has not moved since.

On the care plan now. They come before and after the wet, send photos both times, and I have stopped thinking about the roof entirely, which I gather is the point.
