A Townsville roof space sits well above fifty degrees on a February afternoon, and that heat sits on your ceiling all evening. Ventilation moves it out, insulation stops what is left coming down. We install roof ventilators on the correct side of the ridge and in the right quantity for the roof area rather than one in the middle as a gesture, seal and flash every penetration properly, and top up ceiling insulation to a level that suits a tropical climate. Where a roof space is holding moisture as well as heat, ventilation usually fixes the mould problem people have been treating from below for years.

Ventilators are $460 to $690 each installed, and most houses need two or three; ceiling insulation is $18 to $28 a square metre supplied and laid, so a 140 square metre ceiling runs $2,600 to $3,900 and a larger home reaches $4,600

How many whirlybirds do I actually need?
Roughly one per fifty square metres of roof area for a tiled roof, more for steel. One on its own does very little, which is why so many people think they do not work.
Will ventilators leak?
Not if the penetration is flashed and sealed as part of the install. Nearly every leaking whirlybird we are called out to was fitted by someone who cut the hole and sat it on top.
Does insulation help in the tropics, or only in cold places?
It helps more here, not less. The temperature difference between a Townsville roof space and your lounge room in February is bigger than anything a Melbourne winter produces.
